I was all hyped up to try this and realized I didn’t have the ranch seasoning pack or all the ingredients to make some. So, I took a gamble and used what I had which was Lipton Onion Soup Mix! lol!! Oh my goodness! That was soo good!! I served it over yellow rice ( my son’s favorite) I think white rice or egg noodles would be good with it too! Next time I will add potatoes and veggies. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe with us! My kitchen is happy!! 💜💜💜

The butter is the only liquid and it keeps the chicken moist it’s so good I also added potatoes, carrots, corn and added salt, pepper, garlic powder and garlic salt

      1. I came to the comments to see if someone added vegetables, since I planned to add them. It sounds like a winning combination!

I have a very picky 2 year old who doesn’t usually eat chicken. I found this recipe late at night and prepped it before I went to bed so I could just throw it in the crockpot the next morning. Well safe to say my toddler loved it and even asked for MORE! I ended up putting two packets of ranch mix and shredded it over mashed potatoes. Thank you so much for sharing this!

I cooked this for one hour on high and six hours in low. Way to long as it came out more like shredded chicken and I wouldn’t use quite as much butter.. It was good with the vegetables (I didn’t see your response before I made it so added it at the beginning. Next time I will add them half way through.

      2. Do you put the veggies under the chicken thighs or over the top? Also did you add the powder o and butter over everything or just the chicken and layered in veggies?

        1. 5 stars
That sounds delicious! I will have to try that. I always end up making the sides separately, which defeats the purpose of a crockpot meal being ready when I get home at night.

I added potatoes, carrots, and corn in the crockpot with the chicken and a little extra butter I also added garlic powder, garlic salt, black pepper and salt everyone loved it.

  1. Found you thru Pinterest…would like to try this tomorrow, but wonder will it make a difference if I use stick margarine instead of butter? Thanks!

  2. I have a big fat family. Do you think this will double ok? If I layer the chicken and seasoning and butter?

    1. Yes! I’ve layered it double for a potluck and triple layered it for a huge family dinner. Worked great each time!

    2. 5 stars
Yes I used a big package of boneless skinless chicken breast and I didn’t have to layer it and I put potatoes, carrots and corn on top and an extra package of ranch seasoning and butter I didn’t use stick butter I also added garlic salt and garlic powder and salt and black pepper everyone loved it

    1. I actually make this in the oven but instead melt a stick of butter mix it with a packet of ranch rub it on chicken and bake…I was wondering if I could do it like that but in the crockpot instead of oven

    1. 5 stars
Yes I did and I cooked it at 350 for 4 hours instead of low for 8 hours also added potatoes and carrots and corn and garlic powder and garlic salt and salt and black pepper everyone loved it

I tried this today and it’s delicious! My chicken did dry out a tiny bit so it could use some kind of sauce. What do you suppose would work? Think I’ll double the ranch packets next time though. I’d like it a bit tangy-er

    1. 5 stars
I just used butter and mine didn’t dry out at all I also put the chicken in the crockpot then the ranch seasoning and butter didn’t use stick butter then I added potatoes, carrots and corn put ranch seasoning, garlic salt, garlic powder, salt, black pepper and some more butter on top then cooked it at 350 for 4 hours didn’t dry out and everyone loved it and I stirred it occasionally

  4. Probably user error because I’m not a good cook but I tried this today, with some small cut up pieces of red potatoes and it was a bust 🙁 not sure what I did wrong but the chicken looked really rubbery, not browned like yours and the potatoes never got cooked all the way. I put it all in the oven for awhile hoping to save it but it still was super bland and didn’t look very appetizing. Your picture looks delish! My 5 yr old wanted PB&J instead. Oh well. Any suggestions?

    1. Well, there are actually no potatoes in this recipe 🙂 I am not sure because mine was delicious and tasted full of ranch flavor. Did you follow the directions?

    2. It sounds like you didn’t cook it long enough. The chicken should of been super tender not rubbery. I usually start my crockpot first thing in the morning around 7-8a.m. on high and then at noon turn to low and by supper time 5-6p.m. everything is cooked perfectly and tender. I hate that yours turned out bad. Once you get the hang of crockpot cooking it really is a breeze.

I put the chicken in the crockpot added ranch seasoning and butter I didn’t use stick butter then I added potatoes, carrots, and corn then added another package of ranch seasoning also added garlic powder, garlic salt, salt, black pepper and some more butter cooked at 350 for 4 hours stirring occasionally and it came out amazing everyone loved it and I’m not a good cook and as it cooked I added a little more butter so I’m not sure

  5. If i make the homemade ranch dressing to use in this receipe – do i need to use the sour cream or buttermilk? or just the dry mix stuff? thank you

  6. 5 stars
I made this and it was delicious. I made with mashed potatoes and peas on the side. My husband loved it! Thank you for posting this.

Made this tonight..2 pack ranch 2 sticks of butter 8 thighs. It was a hit in my house… with rice and string beans..

  8. Do you think you could add maybe a 1/2 cup of water if you added in red potatoes and so the chicken wouldn’t turn dry?

    1. 5 stars
I just added extra butter and ranch seasoning and a couple other seasoning and stirred occasionally and as it cooked I added a little more butter

Quite frankly the best recipe I have ever made. I’ve been making it ever since I saw it in your original emailing and my family asks for it by name. My son is going off to college in a few weeks and I’ll ba making some and freezing it for him when he is on his own in his apartment. Simply delicious and so easy. BTW I only cook this in the crockpot and it turns out perfect every time.

  10. I made this and my chicken was dried out and burnt! I used chicken tenderloins I think it was. Should I have changed the time or something?!

  11. Just placed this in crockpot. I used butter from tub and four frozen chicken breasts. Crossing my fingers it satisfies the hubs! From the comments I am hopeful!

  12. Omg! This chicken is AMAZING! Just got my crockpot yesterday for my bday and I couldn’t wait to use it. Was looking for an inexpensive dish to make that only used a few ingredients. And this one was well worth it! Can’t wait to make it again, and pass it on to my friend!!!

I made this recipe for dinner tonight and it was amazing. My pickiest eater even cleaned his plate. It will be one of our go-to recipes now. It is perfect paired with brown rice and veggies.

  14. 5 stars
This was so good I added some things to it but everyone loved it will he making it again and hope I can find more easy meals like this to make in the crockpot

  15. This recipe is amazing and sooo easy!!! I made my own ranch spice since I didn’t have any packets. Also added a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese along with the spice and it turned out delicious!! My 6 year old daughter was begging for seconds and wanted it for lunch at school the next day! ON the way home from practice the next day my mom offered to grab her something on the way home and she said No I want mommys chicken! (Oh I also doubled the recipe so we had a lot)! Actually making it again right now!!

  16. Wow, I can’t get over how easy this is. I love simple slow cooker recipes. This is perfect. And pairs easily with rice and salad which are staples at our house. Adding this to my meal plan soon!

  17. I am trying this today – how long for THIN boneless chicken breast – 8 pieces?
Would you do low 4 hours! Don’t want to dry out chicken but also want chicken cooked lol thank you

  18. Making it tonight with drumsticks.! Im thinking about serving it with a yellow rice. Will that clash or compliment, being the yellow rice has saffron in it?

  19. I’m thinking about adding a block of cream cheese towards the end. Do you think that would be good, or just stick with the butter?

  20. Is it the 1oz package of Ranch Dressing Powder that you are speaking of? I have the 16oz shaker container.

If so, then that’s roughly about 2-3 tablespoons right?
Can’t wait to try. Sounds delicious

  21. I’m trying this tonight. Used 4 chicken breasts, one packet of Aldi brand ranch mix, around a third of the butter and substituted some olive oil in (probably not the same amount total but it’s what we had). Hoping it turns out! 🙂

I’m making for dinner tonight. It smells good in the house.
I’m adding mashed potatoes and a garden salad.

  23. Good morning! Is this 4-6 breast halves… Like 2-3 pounds? I’m thinking of subbing boneless skinless thighs, and trying to make sure we have the right amount of meat. Thanks!!! Looks yummy!

    1. Yes, but you can use whatever amount that would feed your family size. Skinless Boneless Chicken Thighs work great for this recipe!

    1. For me, I never cook chicken breasts longer than 5 hours on low. Any recipe is dry if you go longer. I am excited to try this recipe but I will limit to 5 hours on low.

  24. Hi! I forgot to take my chicken from the freezer last night. Can I do this when frozen chicken breasts?

    1. Did everything come out alright with the frozen chicken? I forgot to take my chicken out last night so I was wondering if I have to cook it longer or just the 8 hours?

I can’t tell you how many people I have given this recipe because it is so extremely easy and delicious! My husband and kids are very picky and they all love this meal. I usually serve it with roasted red potatoes and a vegetable.

I have and cooked semi frozen breasts for 30 minutes. It turned out wonderful. No liquid just melted a little butter on the bottom before throwing the breasts in.

  26. The picture looks like it got brown on top (I’m guessing from the butter?) My family doesn’t like “mushy” chicken from crockpot, but the looks a little “Crisp” ??

  27. Your recipe sounds wonderful and I can’t wait to try it! I do have one question, however, that I need for clarification. You refer to a “slow cooker” and also a “crockpot”. Are these not two different kitchen appliances? And if so, is there any variation on time and/or ingredient amount adjustments that need to be made. I, personally, own a crockpot and want to make sure I get this right! Thank you so much!

  28. I used chicken thighs and coated them in some ranch seasoning mix and seared them in a cast iron before. Turned out amazing!!

  29. If I wanted to make this with only two frozen chicken breasts, do I need to cut down on the ranch seasoning or butter? Or change the cook time at all?
I plan on making it this weekend for only my daughter and I while my significant other is deer hunting since he doesn’t like ranch. (Blasphemous, I know!)

      1. I used two very large frozen chicken breasts, about 3/4 of the ranch packet, and the entire stick of butter on high for four hours and it turned out great! So delicious! Thank you!

Loved this recipe! I’ve shared with many ppl but I’m cooking it in the Instant pot tonight! Have you tired this and found the right amount of time to cook?

    1. We haven’t tried it in the Instant Pot. If you figure it out please let us know so we can share.

    1. I wouldn’t add broccoli until the end or it will become mush. Brussels Sprouts and Corn on the Cob might hold up better.

What a super easy, yummy dinner! I made around 2# of boneless, skinless chicken breasts, from frozen, cooked in my instant pot for 24 minutes. I let the butter melt on suaute first, then added the ranch and chicken. We paired with mashed potatoes and green bans, it will definitely be in our dinner rotation!

  32. Am cooking boneless skinless chicken thighs tonight. About 3ilb. Used a bit of onion flakes and garlic pepper, 1 ranch packet, BBQ sauce (about .1/2 cup or so), chicken broth (have no idea how much) and some leftover ranch cucumber dressing. I think it will be delish.

Tried this the other night and my husband loved it. I added a can of cream of chicken soup as I read someone else did and served it over rice. Granddaughters loved it as well..

  34. I want to make this, i don’t have a stick of butter, is it okay if i use butter from a container? if so how much would you recommend?

    1. A stick of butter equals a half cup from a container. You can substitute one for the other but your recipe might turn out differently.

  35. I’m making this as we speak! If 8 hrs on low makes it too tough (as said in someone’s comment) how long should I cook it for?

  36. 5 stars
Wow, I loved wow easy this dish was! I made it on the stove top with boneless skinless chicken thighs. Served with mashed potatoes and green beans. My husband was thrilled, my teenager said, “Huh, not too bad,” which in teen-speak means delicious! Thanks for another yummy recipe.

I make this recipe a lot. The family loves it! I’m wondering, though, if I can cut the butter in half. I use 4 large breasts and the full Ranch mix packet. Do you have any concerns with how the dish will turn out with half the butter?

    1. Yes, I have used frozen chicken and honestly it doesn’t change. Just be sure done and it will add liquid so just watch that.

  38. 5 stars
I made this tonight with three large boneless skinless chicken breasts. After only 3 1/2 hours on low, the internal temperature of the breasts were all around 175 degrees and were so juicy and tender.
