Can you freeze cheese?

Can you freeze cheese? Yes, you can! Check out this money saving tip!

Can you freeze cheese? The answer is YES!  Cheese is easily frozen in the package from the store.  Just simply date it with a permanent marker with the date you are freezing it and place it in the freezer.  I personally find that shredded and block cheese freeze very well.  I also freeze cheese sticks and sliced cheese too!  They can sometimes change consistency and become crumbled, but they are perfect for cooking with.

Can you freeze cheese? 

By freezing you extend the life by 4 to 6 months past expiration or from time you freeze.  You can also freeze it that is out of the original wrapper by placing in plastic wrap and then placing it into a freezer bag.  I prefer the original package when possible as it is a time and money saver.

What will NOT freeze well is cheese singles that are individually wrapped in cellophane.  They are not “real cheese” meaning they have a large water base to them as well as other oils and they don’t freeze as well as natural cheese.

Also, when thawing simply place in your refrigerator until thawed and use soon after thawed.

  1. That’s too funny, I was just asking my husband this question the other day. He works in the Foodservice Industry. I had bought quite a few bags of the Kraft and Sargento shredded cheese at the Ralph’s sale last week, since I used the Von’s booklet coupon. $1.50 a bag… not so bad! Thanks for the tip!

  2. I find that you can freeze individual cheese slices just fine, never had a problem with it. Maybe the brand makes a difference, but I can say that Kraft and Borden Singles freeze and thaw just fine.

  3. I’ve been freezing mine for a couple of years now, and I love it. If I’m baking something that calls for shredded cheese, I just throw it on there straight from the freezer, then put the bag back in the freezer. Bakes just fine, and I don’t have to worry about it going bad in the fridge before I get a chance to use it all.
    I did find that when I froze cheese slices, they thawed with white specks on them. We didn’t get sick or anything from eating them (and they smelled fine), but it freaked me out enough not to do it anymore. 🙂

  4. I have been freezing Kraft singles for a few months now and yes I got the white spots and we didn’t get sick either but being that grilled cheese with Kraft singles is a go meal I have decided to keep doing it. Also like most other things that we freeze it works best when u cook with it.
