Sugar String Eggs and Baskets:
The Kids will love to mix together the sugar water mixture that holds the project together! The final product will make your home festive and just in time for the Easter Bunny to make his appearance. Once you make these, you will want to turn this into an annual Easter tradition that the whole family will look forward to year after year.
Blow up a balloon to the size you want your sugar string egg or basket to be. Tie the end and add a piece of string about 8 inches long. You’ll use this to hang it to dry when the project is complete. Tip – we used a hanger with clothespins for this.
Wrap the colored crochet cotton(yarn) around the balloon. You can cover it completely or leave open spaces. When finished, secure the string end under another layer so it isn’t loose. Tip – be sure to secure the string so it doesn’t unravel.
Sugar String Eggs and Baskets
Ingredients
- Dixie Crystals Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
- Balloons
- Colored cotton crochet string can also use yarn or ribbon if you prefer
- Scissors
- Measuring cup bowl and spoon
Instructions
- Blow up a balloon to the size you want your egg or basket. Tie the end and add a piece of string about 8 inches long. You’ll use this to hang it to dry when the project is complete.
- Wrap the colored crochet cotton around the balloon. You can cover it completely or leave open spaces. When finished, secure the string end under another layer so it isn’t loose.
- Mix 1/2 cup of warm water with 1 cup of sugar. Mix completely until all sugar is dissolved. The mixture will be thick with a glue-like consistency.
- Put the string-wrapped balloon into the sugar water mixture until it is completely wet. Make sure all sides are coated with the sugar-water mixture. (NOTE: Larger balloons will require more sugar mixture to hold their shape.)
- Hang the balloon to dry over the sink or outside.
- Once the string is completely dry (this can take up to 24 hours depending on how much string you use and how thick the string is), pop and remove the balloon.
- Shape your basket and add ribbon, Easter grass and little bunnies or chicks to make it festive.
- If you want to store and keep your eggs, spray them with clear spray paint.
Mix 1/2 cup of warm water with 1 cup of sugar. Mix completely until all sugar is dissolved. The mixture will be thick with a glue-like consistency. Think paper mache 🙂
Put the string-wrapped balloon into the sugar water mixture until it is completely wet. Make sure all sides are coated with the sugar-water mixture. (NOTE: Larger balloons will require more sugar mixture to hold their shape.) The fun thing about this project is you can make a basket or egg any size you want. You can even use a punch size balloon to make a HUGE string Easter Basket!
Hang the balloon to dry over the sink or outside. Tip – We used a hanger and tied them to the hanger and then hung over our sink to dry. You can also hang in a shower that is not being used if you have a guest bathroom.
Shape your basket and add ribbon, Easter grass and little bunnies or chicks to make it festive. If you want to store and keep your eggs, spray them with acrylic crystal clear spray paint.
Once the string is completely dry (this can take up to 24 hours depending on how much string you use and how thick the string is), pop and remove the balloon. Another trick is that you can actually put a treat inside the balloon and then when you pull out the popped balloon the treat will remain inside. Of course that just depends on if you want to remove the treats later.
This project is one you can adapt in so many different ways and that is why we love it so much. From home decor to a craft with the kids. Sugar String Eggs and Easter Baskets are so much fun to make and to enjoy with the whole family. This would be a fun craft with Girl Scout Troops, at School or with your family. If you are looking for a fun DIY or Craft this year for Easter look no further!
Sugar String Eggs and Baskets are the perfect Easter or Spring Decoration. So much fun to make!

Oh how cute. I haven’t started making anything for Easter yet and I need to get my rear in gear because it’s one of our favorite holidays. I’d love to let the kids help me make some sugar string eggs and baskets. Thanks for sharing.
Your sugar string baskets came out absolutely adorable! I love how colorful they are, and that you included easy directions. I tried something like this one but the directions weren’t clear so I messed it all up. Plus I tried it with flour I think, I didn’t know you could make sugar glue. So neat!
What a fabulous idea, so crafty! I will show this to my daughter who love to do fun craft. Thank you for sharing this idea. I almost forgot that Easter is just around the corner probably because of the sever weather condition we been having.
We will be having a lot of competitions to design the Easter egg for kids to join. These designs and concepts are great inspirations. I love the pastel colors used! Thanks for the neat and detailed step-by-step instructions. 🙂
This project turned out so beautiful!!! I love the detail that the sugar gives the ribbon it almost looks like glitter or snow! I think this would make a beautiful centerpiece for an Easter dinner or brunch.
I am so glad that I ran across your post. Easter is approaching rapidly and I am so unprepared. I am going to bookmark your post so I can decide what crafts I am going to do before it is too late.
It’s amazing all of the crafts that you can make with everyday items, and even something as simple as sugar. I’ve been seeing a few crafts that incorporate balloons to hold the round shape. This looks like a lot of fun for the Easter holiday.
I absolutely LOVE this idea! I’m a teacher, and have been looking for a fun easter craft to do with my students. This looks perfect, and would be a huge hit with the kids and their parents.
My balloons collapsed when drying did they dry too fast with the heat and sun
I would think so 🙁
