How to Start the Keto Diet

The Keto Diet isn’t as hard to begin as you may believe.  While I recommend doing some research up front, here are the basic steps to begin your journey.  If you don’t already know, the Keto diet is another version of the popular low carb diet.  It focuses on getting your body to go into ketosis.  Ketosis burns fat faster and thus helps you drop weight easier.

When you eat sugar and carbohydrates, your body uses them for energy.  When you remove those from your diet, your body is forced to use the existing fat for energy.  This helps you drop fat fast, and easily.

Learn your daily macros

To begin, you’ll want to calculate how much you should be eating each day.  Your focus will be on limiting carbs to under 30grams, but usually, 20 grams is most common.  You’ll also want to make sure you are getting enough protein and healthy fats throughout the day to keep your body fueled.

I recommend using the Ketogenic Calculator to figure out what your daily Macros will be.  This takes basic information (height, weight, etc.) to calculate the calories and net grams of protein, fat, and carbs you should be eating each day.

Clean out your pantry

Success comes from having the right foods on hand and getting rid of the bad foods.  While some fruits and vegetables are acceptable, you won’t be eating any sugars, bread, or starchy foods (potatoes or corn).  If you can, I recommend cleaning out your pantry to begin.  This will keep the potential for temptation out of reach.

Invest in tools for the diet

For me, this is a good digital kitchen scale, Keto cookbooks, and the best Keto friendly foods.  That means lots of meats, cheese, heavy whipping cream, and coconut. You’ll find more tips for pantry supplies in the links above, as well as on popular Keto Diet support groups.

You may also find that you will do well by investing in some Ketosis Test Strips.  These will help you gauge if your body is in ketosis yet, and if you need to adjust your diet more.  Some foods like fruits and select vegetables will prevent you from being in ketosis, so what works for one doesn’t work for all.  These will help you learn what does work for you.

Find a support group

Whether you team up with local in real life friends, or you join one of the many support groups on Facebook, you need someone to help you with this journey.  Find someone to help you with food ideas, and mostly to help hold you accountable.

If you are wondering how to start the Keto diet, this is a great place to begin.  You’ll see that there is a ton of success to be had with this minor dietary change!
