Travel Tip - Do not bring in ANYTHING after traveling to prevent bed bugs and pests

This is a hot Travel Tip – Do not bring in ANYTHING after traveling to prevent bed bugs and pests. One of the best travel tips that I ever got came from my Terminix man.  I was preparing for a vacation when it was our routine scheduled Terminix appointment.  He noticed all of our suitcases and the prep that I was doing to get ready and mentioned to me that bringing in bed bugs, roaches and other pests were normally because you pick them up while traveling.   He said that even if the place that you are staying isn’t infested that when you fly you can pick them up from the luggage that is next to yours.

Travel Tip – Do not bring in ANYTHING after traveling to prevent bed bugs and pests:

After traveling he said that you should empty all of the contents of your suitcase onto a blanket and leave it outside for several days only bringing it in to go straight into the washer.  He suggested washing those items in hot water to be safe. Since we have a garage, we have followed his advice since. The first think we do when we get home from a trip is to unload our luggage into the garage empty it on a blanket.  In fact, we keep a huge moving blanket in the garage just for this purpose.

He also suggested that we keep the suitcases unzipped and leave them in the garage for at least three days.  This is a great travel tip and when it comes to bringing home bed bugs or other pests it is a step that we are not willing to skip no matter what.  It has paid off for us because we did find a baby roach in one of our suitcases once that we were able to keep out of our home as a result of using this tip.

We hope that this tip helps you too!

  1. Yikes! Thanks for the tip. When you go to a hotel you can obviously do some checking for infestation (ex. stripping the blankets off of the mattress to look for signs of bed bugs) but you’re pretty much out of luck if you’re flying (since you can’t control the luggage your luggage comes into contact with).

  2. I also thought of something else to add to this. I would think using the XL to XXL size zip lock bags to keep your actual items in inside the luggage going and coming back would also help to keep bugs out of your belongings inside the luggage and you may be able to spot them quicker. I like this idea. What would be a tip for those of us that live in apt. buildings? I don’t have access to a garage and I don’t have a balcony.

    1. Do you have a friend you could leave your suitcases at? You don’t want to leave in your car because your car can actually get infested.
