Lightly spray your slow cooker with non stick cooking spray.  Pour the apple pie filling into the bottom of your crockpot. Next sprinkle the cake mix all over the top of the apple filling.

Place butter on top.  Put the lid on and cook for 2 1/2 hours on high. Scoop and serve warm.  You can also use a gluten free cake mix to make this into a gluten free recipe!  If you can find a spice cake mix you can sub with a yellow cake mix and additional spices (cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves).

  1. Question:
Will this recipe work for any cake flavor? Will the number of ingredients change? Should I/we follow the box instructions?

  2. If I keep it on “warm” and don’t eat it right away , will it dry out ? And how did you store it … In the fridge?

Shopko is a retailer in mostly midwestern states…..they have the green bay packer themed crockpots….go to Shopko.com and search fro crockpot on their website

I just tried this for the first time last night, it’s only for 2 of us so I took a chance and halved the recipe. The spice cake I used was a 15. (Something) ounce box. Total measurement came out to just about 3 cups. So I did 1 can apple pie filling, scant 1 1\2 Cup spice cake mix, (put remaining 1 1/2 Cup in zip lock baggie for next time) and 1stick butter cut up and spread over the top. I thought 2 hours would be adequate since it was only half the recipe, but it did take the full 2 1/2 hours. I used a 4 quart oval Hamilton Beach crock pot.

This particular crock pot got it VERY done around 1 edge while there was still a slightly doughy spot on the other edge. I have several crock pots from several different manufacturers so I am going to start keeping a log of each one and how it does with different dishes…

It did come out VERY sweet. I do recommend vanilla ice cream with it.

Yes, you can do it in the oven. I have used a 9×13 and an 8×8 glass baking dishes. I melted the butter and poured over the cake mix. For 8×8 I used only one can of filling. Bake at 325

  5. I am in the process of making this now. It has been on high for 4 hours and still looks raw.
I know it isnt my crockpot as I just used it for chili yesterday.
Is it supposed to look and have this raw texture?

  6. My slow cooker lid has the steam release hole. Will this affect the apple spice cake? I have not made it yet, but was asked to give it a try.

    1. None of mine have a vent hole but I would give it a try – from what I have read it says cookers with a vent hole have a tendency to overcook easier. Have you ever had that problem?

  7. it shows 2 sticks of butter on top and that’s what I did now butter is still on top
melted tho but in same place I put it in

I have an All-In-One Pressure cooker/Slow cooker. The slow cooker can only be used on low. How long should I cook it? Maybe 5 hours?

  12. Delicious but way too sweet fir our family! Any suggestions? I don’t want to use another cake, I liked the spice cake flavor!

  13. The first time I made this it came out awesome was a big hit at our picnic made it twice since and it came out soupy can’t figure out what happened the the same crockpot all 3 times.

  14. I baked this cake this past week, and it was great! My guests loved it. I think next time I bake it, I will cut up the butter sticks to make sure all the edges are covered. It was a cold day, so it was just perfect! I will certainly make it again! Thank you!

  15. Hi! Love the simplicity of this recipe! I’m trying it tomorrow, but with fresh apples instead of canned- anything in particular I should do? Dice or slice? Mix with cinnamon or anything? Thanks! 🙂

    1. I would go with sauteing them with some butter and cinnamon first to break them down a bit. Enjoy!

  16. I have all of the ingredients but not making this until tomorrow until I have the funds to go buy some vanilla ice cream I’m super excited to give this a try

I only used one stick of butter and it turned out very good.
I was skeptical at first but it was delicious.
I bet you could use any combination of fruit and cake mix.

  18. If using fresh apples that you have cooked how many cups would you use for the recipe? We are doing an apple unit at school and I want to cook this with my children.

  19. If you double the recipe do you put a layer apples, cake mix, butter, than apple, cake mix and butter?

  20. I was wondering if you thought I could make this in my insta pot on slow cook settings? I made it before in the crockpot and it is delicious. It smells so good you can hardly wait to eat it. But my crockpot will be busy with something else on Thanksgiving. Thanks.
