Christmas Scent
One of my favorite things to prepare for Christmas is “Christmas Scent“. This is a must for when you are entertaining during the holidays. My Mom passed this recipe to me and it is the perfect “touch” to have as a hostess during the holidays. Be sure you check the water often or use a slow cooker as it will evaporate and can leave you with a mess. Every year I make this and I get so many complements from my guests. Everyone wants to know my secret at the holidays because the house smells so wonderful.
This is also really useful if you are selling your house. I made this and simmered it on the stove while we were having showings. It was something refreshing without being overpowering. I am not a fan of lighting candles so this was a nice alternative to keep the house smelling delicious for guests.
All you need to make Christmas Scent is Cinnamon Sticks, Bay Leaves, whole cloves, a lemon, an orange and 1 quart of water. Combine all the ingredients in a tea kettle or saucepan and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer as long as desired. Check often and add more water as needed or you can place in your crock pot.
I always get so many compliments from guests during the holiday season and they want to know what my secret is. Trust me it is worth trying Christmas Scent.

I think I’ll try to do this in a crock pot. It may take a bit longer to get the aroma going but I won’t have to eyeball the water as much & use less electricity.
Thanks for all your wonderful tips; I appreciate you.
Merry Christmas to you & yours.
I agree! My crockpots are always in use but I got a smaller size that I am going to try this year.
Thank you for posting! This is just what I needed! I’ve got it on the stove now. Thank you for your website and your postings. May you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!!
Thanks Mandy!
Something is missing from that recipe. I swear there are juniper berries in that photo.
Nope just cloves 🙂
what is in the picture of the simmer potpourri? Those aren’t cloves.
Yes they are. They “swell” up as they simmer.
Great idea! I think I’ll use my little crockpot, too. thx
this is a scent i could smell all of the time…love the cin., w/ lemons, cloves, oranges. never heard of adding bay leaves though.
Love the idea of using the crockpot for this.
Just the thought of this scent wafting through my house makes me happy!
I know this is going to smell good! I’ll be making this!
