Easy 3 Ingredient Banana Bread

Banana Bread:

I had bananas that were getting over-ripe that I needed to use so I decided to try this easy recipe. I quickly mixed all the ingredients together to create this delicious treat.

Simply mash the bananas in a large bowl, then add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Spray 2 small loaf pans or 1 large loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray and divide the batter and pour into two loaf pans. You can even make muffins.

Next, I topped one of the loaves with mini chocolate chips. I love chocolate chips on everything, well almost everything so I decided to add them to one loaf. Next, I put them in the oven and baked at for 35-40 minutes at 350 degrees.  You might need to bake a little longer if using 1 loaf pan.

Easy 3 Ingredient Banana Bread

Best of all you can easily make this gluten free when you use a gluten free cake mix or you can use a sugar free cake mix!  Without the additional oil this is actually a lower fat version of traditional banana bread.  Some readers think it has a bit of cake texture, but my family thought it was great.

I like to keep yellow cake mix on hand and make this when I have surprise company visit.  It is also nice to be able to make when I have over ripened bananas on hand. Another great tip is to use a spice cake mix.  Our readers tell us that makes an amazing loaf of bread!

I do love this delicious warm banana bread right off the of the cooling rack.  If you have extra simply store in an airtight container.  It makes great housewarming gifts too! It is an easy recipe to use over-ripen bananas.

I made these as muffins and baked for 27 minutes in a 350 preheated oven. After lining the muffin tin with liners, I filled it about halfway with the batter, sprinkled a mixture of butter, cinnamon, sugar and flour that I mixed to the consistency of wet sand, then filled the muffin tin with the batter and sprinkled more of the butter cinnamon mixture on top. The muffins came our flavorful and moist with a nice, crunchy muffin top. Hubby loves them. Says I should go into the muffin business. Thanks for this easy recipe.

This is a great recipe thank you! I was wondering how long it lasts and does it need to be refrigerated?

    1. You can refrigerate to extend the life but I would keep in an airtight container. We never have it last more than a couple days here 🙂

Could you freeze half the batter? It is only my son who eats Banana Bread and the last time we made this AMAZING recipe he didn’t eat it fast enough and it went bad. He usually eats this for breakfast and for games

Great recipe! Leaving on a trip and needed a recipe to use 4 overripe bananas. I already had a butter pecan cake mix so I was able to use it instead of running to the store. Made a delicious loaf of banana bread to start our vacation.

I would add another egg if you want it to be more cake-like. But I think it’s perfect just the was it’s written. Mine was very light. I did add about 1/4 cup of oil

I love love love this recipe, I make it all the time! Does anyone know if you could substitute the bananas for a can of pumpkin to make pumpkin bread?

  12. I am making it first time right now.
Yellow cake mix, 3 bananas, 2 eggs, 1/2 c. Peanut butter chips, and 1/2 c. Walnuts. In a bundt cake pan. We will see! Smells fantastic!

  13. 5 stars
This is a very versatile recipe I feel. That’s the type I like. I made it with peanut butter chips. Who doesn’t like peanut butter and banana. It was Elvis Presley favorite! I also added the walnuts. I have to put nuts in most of my breads accept the lemon poppy seed. I baked it in a bundt cake pan for the time that was stated. I added a cream cheese glaze to the top of it and it is amazing.

  14. 5 stars
I made mini muffins. I added walnuts that I cut really fine (kids claim they don’t like nuts) so that they added a little protein. Baked them for 12-14 minutes and they were done. I got 48 mini muffins from the one batch! We love them!

    1. Not sure about that but I bet it could! Maybe add a little applesauce too. Let us know if you try it!

  15. 5 stars
If I used a spice cake mix, is there a glaze or frosting you recommend? I also have a white cake mix that I could use blueberries with… Thoughts? Love all the responses, super encouraging.
    (:

    1. Reduce baking powder: for each teaspoon, decrease 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon.
Reduce sugar: for each cup, decrease 0 to 2 tablespoons.
Increase liquid: for each cup, add 2 to 4 tablespoons.
Increase oven temperature by 25 degrees F.

      1. Thanks!
I used super moist butter pecan mix. Added an extra banana (4 total) an extra egg (3 total) and 8Tbsp of water. I hand mixed the batter. It is very important at high altitude to not over mix. And I baked for 45 mins at 375° in a bundt pan. It turned out amazing! Thank you for the recipe. I will never make banana bread any other way!

        1. I was skeptical about this recipe, but had 4 over ripe bananas and the rest of the ingredients, short on time, so I decided to try it. It was awesome-moist and delicious-hubby is raving about it! I used French vanilla cake mix and added pecans. Will definitely do it again!

I’d like to try this with a lemon cake mix and blueberries. What could I substitute to add the moisture that the bananas would normally give this recipe? Sour cream? Applesauce? Water?

  21. One more ripening day, I’m so excited!! What about strawberries or will that make it too mushy? This is my kind of baking, I;m over the 12 ingredient cooking!

This came out delicious and extremely easy to make, I did add 1/2 cup sour cream and baked in bundt pan for 40 minutes. Will definitely make again. Thanks so much for this wonderful recipe!

    1. I have sour cream. Bananas, eggs, hazelnut roasted, butter, yellow cake mix, vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, cranberrys. I know this will be great.

  27. 5 stars
I followed cake box recipe, exchanged water for buttermilk as I had some over and it was amazing, so light. Couldn’t have been easier, Definitely a quick go to recipe when in need.

  28. 5 stars
This is an amazing recipe! I’ve made it several times and it always comes out great. When I get too many overripe bananas I just stick them skin and all into a Ziploc bag then throw them in the freezer. Then thaw in the fridge. I cut the end off the banana and basically pour the contents into a bowl. My husband swears that this makes the banana bread more banana’y. Lol. Love your blog!

  29. 5 stars
I made 20 muffins instead of the loves….this is so good But what are nutritional values…or WW points

  30. 5 stars

Good idea I need to do that to I love ❤️ banana bread I think I did this recipe a long time a
Go yes it turns out great you can never mess it up.

  32. I’ve been making this for years. My recipe has 4 oz softened cream cheese and 3/4 c nuts. Great way to use up overripe bananas delicious too!

  33. 5 stars
I used “spice cake” mix, figuring it would be even better. It was great! I also made about 2 dozen in muffin pans, baking for 20 minutes. They’re such great little snacks that way. Very chewy on the outside, moist and fluffy inside.

Hi, generally I’m not a baker so this recipe sounds great! I have an expired yellow cake mix or new chocolate cake mix in my cabinet Not sure if I can use the expired (2018) one? Also, when would I add strawberries? In the mix it self or afterwards, before baking, on top? Cut them up tiny not whole? I’m thinking of baking cupcakes so they’re easier to freeze. I’m not ever sure when the bananas are considered “ripe” enough to bake. Any advice?Thank you so much 😊

    1. Do not use an expired cake mix. It is not like some other products that you can use past the expiration date. You can ripen your bananas by placing them in a brown paper bag 🙂 After you mix, gently stir in the fruit. Yes, cut them up.

      1. Hi Melissa,
I just saw your reply…thank you!
I didn’t use the expired mixes but wondered why as I thought it just wouldn’t rise well but health wise would still okay?
I actually made 2 breads and gave one to my parents. My Dad doesn’t like bananas but enjoyed it (he didn’t know it was made with banana ms, lol).
Thanks again! Be well, stay safe and healthy!

I only had a Betty Crocker French Vanilla cake mix, but it turned out AMAZING!!! Followed the recipe and baked in a loaf pan at 350 for “60 mins” it took longer than the recipe called for.

I don’t normally leave reviews, however, this was delicious and so easy. I added a bit of vanilla pasta and some raw sugar on top and it is amazing. Can’t wait to make it again!

  38. Now, this is a timely post to come across, we have just gone back into lockdown so if anything is going to happen I can see it being more banana bread making. I shall have to try your recipe out. Thank you.

  40. My mother in law is our family’s resident banana bread enthusiast, so I’ll have to pass this along to her. Sounds easy enough!

  41. This recipe is so stinking easy I have been wanting to make bread for my family. I would love to try this recipe for my family this weekend.

  42. I never knew you could do this. I love banana bread too. I’m going to give this a try next time. I can’t wait to see how it tastes.

  43. I love the BC’S yellow cake mix! I miss baking those! (Can’t find them easily where I am). Looks yummy and easy!

  44. I used 4 bananas and a regular (ie not “super-moist”) Duncan Hines yellow cake mix. Gave me two loaf pans worth.
Putin oven for 37 minutes. Tastes great, came out crumbly. Didn’t stop me from just softening butter and spreading it on there.

I have now made this twice. We love it and it’s so quick and easy. I did add some cinnamon the second time but you don’t have to do that.

I made this with a butter recipe yellow cake mix and added walnuts. I also added about one tbsp of cooking oil. I used an 8×8 pan and baked for about 45 minutes on 350. It turned out great! I’d like to try it again with a banana cake mix.

  46. I am looking forward to making this recipe. But wanted to know If I could add some strawberries to it that I have in my refrigerator. I need to use them up so I was wondering if they could be added to this 3 ingredient Banna Bread recipe.

    1. 5 stars
I made this in one pan and baked for an hour using 4 medium size bananas. I didn’t have any vanilla to add but used almond flavoring instead. This turned out great!

  47. 5 stars
I made it as the recipe said, I made it in a Bundt pan and added a handful of walnuts to the bottom of the pan so when flipped out they will be on the top. I also mixed in a handful of walnuts in the mix. The amount of mix almost filled the entire pan and I was scared it would overflow when baked. But thankfully it didn’t. It rose beautifully. Will definitely make it again. Thanks for a great recipe.

  48. 5 stars
I am so impressed with this easy recipe you don’t have to let bananas go to waste anymore it’s quick and easy and it tastes great put some butter on it you won’t regret it

Best banana bread I ever made! I had a Duncan Hines carrot cake mix in the cabinet and used it in this recipe. I used four bananas and added extra cinnamon and 1/4 a cup of brown sugar. I also added raisins since my husband loves them. It was honestly the best tasting and the moistest banana bread I’ve ever made. We love this recipe and my husband is already asking me to make it again. How can something this good be so easy!

This is so easy! I also add vanilla, chopped pecans and choco chips as per hubs request. He loves and eats it right away.

  52. anyone try this with once frozen bananas, let out to thaw before using, I freeze my “older” sweeter ones, just wondering if it would make things too watery and maybe I should go for fresh ones instead

    1. I know this is a late reply but I mashed up my bananas, put them in a gallon bag, rolled the bag to remove as much air as possible, freeze, thawed out in the fridge until completely thawed, then add like usual and it turned out perfectly! It did not mess with the batter or the bake. Since then I have frozen a few bags of bananas.

  53. I’m going to have to give this a try. I actually have all these ingredients. Some of my bananas are starting to get brown too. I can’t wait to try this.

  54. 5 stars

Had some very ripe bananas to use up and I tried this quick recipe this morning, using a box of butter pecan cake mix. I made 21 muffins, about half with chocolate chips. I baked them for approx. 27 minutes. These turned out delicious and it’s definitely a ‘keeper’ recipe for me. Thanks!

  57. 5 stars
I have to admit I was skeptical of how the bread would turn out considering its extreme simplicity. I was left in awe of just how delicious it was! I used a banana supreme cake mix, added a 1/2 tspn of vanilla, and a 1/2 cup of chopped pecans. I used sweet cream butter to oil the pans. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing recipe!
